Can my network connection settings affect Sketch?

If you connect to the internet through a VPN, proxy or your network includes a firewall, you may need to make some adjustments for Sketch to work properly

VPNs, proxies or firewalls are commonly used to allow access to corporate networks or to protect privacy. This means they control access to broader networks such as the wider internet.

Typically when working remotely you might be required to use a VPN to access company resources, some companies even pre-configure laptops to only connect to the internet via a VPN. Usually you will connect to a network (e.g. your home wifi) and then start a VPN client which effectively filters the traffic between your computer and the internet.

Sometimes a VPN or corporate networks can have specific rules that affect the communication between the Mac app and our servers, causing unexpected results.

Other times, there could be a proxy server involved in your connection. Proxy servers act as an intermediary between your computer and the webpage or service you are trying to access.

For other teams, a firewall may be set up to add an extra layer of protection. Firewalls monitor incoming and outgoing network traffic based on predefined security rules.

If any of these network tools are in place (VPN, proxy or firewall) you may see that you cannot log in or register the Mac App, upload files or collaborate in real-time with others.

You can quickly check if this is the case by disconnecting from the VPN or corporate network (if possible) and connecting to the internet via a public network. If this resolves the issue, it’s likely that a VPN or corporate network (with a firewall or proxy) is blocking some of the connections Sketch needs to work properly.

If you cannot switch connections, you’ll need to contact your network administrator or IT specialist in your organization and ask them to check if traffic is allowed in both directions (inbound and outbound) for the following list of endpoints:
