Custom layer visibility shows or hides a layer when you hover, tap, or press it — which is especially useful when you want to add buttons, menus, or similar interactive elements to your prototype.

## Set a layer’s visibility

To customize how a layer appears in a prototype, set custom visibility settings in the Prototyping panel.

1. Select a layer.
1. Open the **Prototyping panel**.
1. In the **Visibility** section, click the icon.
1. Choose an **Action** (Show, Hide, or Toggle) and a **Trigger** (Hover, Press, or both).

Use **Action** to set what happens to the layer’s visibility: **Show**, **Hide**, or **Toggle**. The **Toggle** option changes the layer’s visibility every time you press it in the prototype.

Next, choose **Hover** or **Press** as a trigger — or select both:

- **Hover** changes a layer’s visibility when the cursor is within its bounds.
- **Press** changes a layer’s visibility when you press the layer with your cursor or finger (if you’re playing a prototype on the iOS app, for example).

Once you’ve added custom visibility to a layer, [preview your prototype](/docs/prototyping/previewing-prototypes/) to see the result.
